Loquats, an open call

Now is the time of year, the liminal time when we can fairly say we are sated with citrus, but stone fruit is not quite ready for harvest. What does that leave us? It leaves us the loquat. Loquats are often overlooked, and this year, I'd like to harvest- en masse- the loquat. If you have a tree and would like to make it available for harvest, please do email forageoakland@gmail.com and we can arrange a harvest time. Loquats make good chutneys, jams, and jellies.

Hi there,

Yesterday I spotted a loquat tree full of fruit on Claremont Avenue just above College across the street from the Safeway parking lot. Not sure who the tree belongs to but the fruit sure looks good...I was driving at the time and so didn't approach the tenants.

Somebody just came and picked my tree sunday without my permission while I was out of the house! I was just going to pick it that day too, they were perfect! Remember to ask first folks, most people will gladly share =)

there is a huge loquat overhanging the sidewalk at prince on telegraph on the nerkeley/oakland border. I've found that a fruit picker works well otherwise a ladder is needed

HEY!!! I love what you're doing with fruit foraging. Thanks for being creative and impressing good things on the community. My boyfriend and I happen to be quite avid loquat pickers; during harvest season we collected HUNDREDS and gorged ourselves. We ended up making about 7 or 8 jars of delicious jam for later, for friends.... Now we're tending to the saplings from the seeds in hopes of planting MORE loquat trees around San Diego area. Happy Picking!!!
